A QUICK LOOK AT THE MA

The department of history offers programs for both pre-doctoral and terminal MA degrees. A student planning to pursue doctoral work at the University of Oklahoma will take the pre-doctoral program; completion of this thesis program does not automatically qualify a student for admission into the Ph.D. program. We offer a detailed description of both MA tracks, from application to planing your graduation, in the Graduate_Student_Handbook.  Below is a brief sketch of our program parameters and course requirements:

Pre-doctoral MA Program
Students must take at least 5seminars along with 9 hours of other coursework (upper-division courses for MA credit, or directed readings).  4 of these courses must be in the student’s major field of study. In addition, all incoming students must complete the one-credit hour course HIST 5001: Navigating the Historical Profession, which introduces students to the profession, during their first semester at the University of Oklahoma. This coursework will culminate in the completion of a satisfactory thesis.

Terminal Program
Students must complete 6 or 7 graduate courses in a major field; when possible, one seminar should be a research seminar.  Students must also take 3 or 4 courses in a minor or comparative field, including at least one elective in a cognate field.  In addition, all incoming students must complete the one-credit hour course HIST 5001: Navigating the Historical Profession, which introduces students to the profession, during their first semester at the University of Oklahoma. This coursework will culminate in a 4-hour written examination over major and comparative fields.
